• The gate catches at the same point every cycle. A cracked or shifted mounting plate changes the operator’s geometry by even a quarter-inch, and the arm binds at full extension. • Fresh rust streaks below the operator mount. Rust weeping from a weld joint means moisture has breached the paint film and is working the steel from inside. On FAAC 415 installations with painted steel posts, this usually starts where the mounting plate meets the post, because that joint is impossible to prep properly during original installation.
• The operator arm makes a popping sound at startup. That pop is the bracket flexing before the gate moves. It means the weld or bolt pattern has loosened, and the arm is taking a running start against a moving target. Left alone, it strips the internal gears.
• The gate leaf has dropped visibly. A sagging leaf overloads the operator because the arm is no longer pushing through its designed arc. The root cause is often a failed hinge pin or a cracked hinge box, both of which we fabricate on-site rather than waiting for a FAAC backorder.
• The mounting plate bolts spin freely. Spinning bolts mean the weld nuts inside the post have broken loose, which happens when the plate flexes repeatedly. We cut open the post, re-weld the nut plates, and seal the access with a fabricated cover plate that matches the original profile.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of checks that won’t hurt you: confirm the gate isn’t obstructed, verify the FAAC disconnect handle is fully engaged, and look for obvious bolt looseness at the mounting plate. Do not attempt to weld a loaded gate post or repair a cracked operator bracket yourself. The gate leaf is under significant weight, and cutting or heating a stressed weld can release that load unpredictably. We have pulled twisted brackets off posts where a homeowner’s repair held for two weeks before the fresh weld sheared and the 300-pound leaf dropped free.
